Volleyball is among the top three sports with the largest number of participants in the United States. At the middle and high school level, volleyball programs are widely popular in the country.
About four hundred thousand female high school players participated in the 2015/2016 season.

There are several thousand volleyball high school age clubs in the United States, and a great number of tournaments are held throughout the year. Two of the best known and most significant competitions are the National Junior Olympics which takes place in late June, early July and the Phoenix International Annual Volleyball Festival around the same time of the year.

Volleyball is sponsored widely at the collegiate level with over one thousand colleges and universities offering athletic programs. The NCAA breaks colleges into 5 different divisions which include Division I/II/III, NAIA, and Junior Colleges. Division I and Division II colleges and universities offer athletic scholarships for select athletes. High school age players get opportunities to participate in an array of competitions where college and university coaches in attendance evaluate and scout for players.
